How Non-League Fans Are Passing Time During Lockdown!
The former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly famously once said "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
What was meant by that quote is that people either love football or hate football and if it is the prior then you normally live and breath football with it as your number one passion. With this in mind we decided to speak to football supporters to see what they are doing in one of the longest breaks without football that many people would've experienced.
The summer of 2020 was supposed to be a busy time with the European Championships taking place to keep supporters occupied whilst waiting for club football to return but instead due to a global pandemic supporters were left with the season cut short and no promise of football for the foreseeable future.
We put a question out on social media simply asking "What are fans of non-league football doing to pass the time without football?" The most common response was simple.......... Thinking of football. It turns out it really is hard to know what to do when the one thing your life revolves around is taken away from you.
Our favourite response to the question which we think best sums up everyone's opinion was from a groundhopper who replied saying he's "Thinking about football, watching old games of football, looking at pictures of football, playing football... think I miss football."
Several supporters had been taking part in exercise such as running or reading books and doing jigsaws to pass the time whilst others would take any sport in which they could watch. Alongside several people who spoke about watching German Football we had responses of "Watching the Belarus and Estonia Premier League" and "Wasting my money betting on the snooker and darts." (This we do not recommend.)
A few unique responses we had included: "Practicing my new found skill of tasering anyone that comes within two meters of me" "Watching Great British Sewing Bee" "Cancelling Sky Sports"
We hope cancelling Sky Sports hasn't taken the whole of lockdown to achieve and we hope that it isn't long until non-league football can safely return but in the mean time remember to stay safe and save lives!
